LIVERPOOL & CRYSTAL PALACE PAY EMOTIONAL TRIBUTE TO JOTA BEFORE COMMUNITY SHIELD<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LIVERPOOL and Crystal Palace paid a heartfelt tribute to Diogo Jota before the Community Shield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Reds’ star tragically passed away in July in a car crash alongside his brother Andre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jota’s death rocked the footballing world as tributes have been made throughout the club’s pre-season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahead of the 2025\/26 season curtain raiser at Wembley Stadium, a moment was taken to remember the forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liverpool legend Ian Rush, FA chair Debbie Hewitt, and Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish laid wreaths on the pitch in front of the Reds’ supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As they made the touching tribute, the fans sang an emotional rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before kick-off off there was a moment’s silence as respects were paid for Jota and his brother Andre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the crowd, plenty of fans could be seen wearing Jota shirts as well as holding scarves with his face on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liverpool also wore a subtle nod to their former player in their kit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The player’s shirts were embroidered with “Forever 20” in reference to his squad number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both teams also wore black armbands for the match in his honour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minute’s silence was interrupted by a minority of Palace fans and then cut short, sparking loud boos from Liverpool supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following Jota’s death this summer, many in the football world shared their condolences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This included stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Liverpool manager Arne Slot and former star Phil Thomas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liverpool also made the touching decision to retire Jota’s No20 shirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darwin Nunez made his own tribute in the pre-season win over Preston North End as he did his team-mate’s iconic celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murals of Jota have also popped up across the city of Liverpool as fans honoured him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jota featured for both the Reds and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He enjoyed a trophy-filled career, winning titles such as the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and the Championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also won international honours with Portugal as he lifted the Nations League titles twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liverpool’s Premier League title last term qualified them for the Community Shield match against FA Cup winner Crystal Palace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
